Key Experiences

From working in a luxury Jewellers to being Financial Crime Apprentice
Due to my previous experience of working in a luxury Jewellers, I have come across many forms of financial crime. This includes attempted fraudulent transactions from stolen credit/debit cards to vulnerable clients under duress, forced to make a high value transaction. My interest in Financial Crime stemmed from this, which led me to want to study the appropriate qualification for this field. As I researched further information on Financial Crime, I came across a Santander opening for Financial Crime Apprentices - this was open to anybody with over 104 UCAS points regardless of background and experience. This was such huge opportunity for me because it would give me the chance to get the relevant experience for my role and also qualifications for the field I would want to get into.

Current Position

I'm part of the first ever project of Financial Crime!
I'm in a team of 16 apprentices, myself included, and we are the first ever regulated Financial Crime Prevention project in the banking industry. It is a 20 month course, starting with an 8 week induction to the bank itself. Within the 8 weeks, we are able to view live cases and the process of what how Financial Crime is dealt with. After the induction, we are provided with materials, buddies and mentors to help us with our qualification - there is a certificate and an advance certificate that we need to study for. Eventually, once the qualifications are achieved paired with the relevant experience, we can venture into the sector that we want to specialise in.

Main Motivations

Participating in exciting projects with supportive colleagues
I really enjoy being able to work in a team, where everyone is starting at the same point. We have mentors with numerous years of experience to guide us, a supportive and passionate line manager, Sarah Preston, as well as materials and first hand experience on live cases. By having such a supportive and passionate manager, it gives me so much motivation to enhance my skills and knowledge of Financial Crime and being able to learn this, which is then backed up experience, it gives be a very clear understanding of my role. I also like the fact that despite working in a team of 16, this journey is tailored to us individually to suit our skills, career path and personal brand - we get to choose our goals and aspirations and everything that we do is tailored to us individually to achieve this.

Don't be afraid to apply for your dream job, try, try, and keep trying to achieve your goal. Determination is your motivation to achieve what you want. Believe in yourself, there's no harm in trying.

Greatest Achievement

My dream job of working in Financial Crime
Due to my previous work experience, I really wanted to go into Financial Crime Prevention. However, the opportunities for this role were extremely limited. Criterias had to be met which included minimum of 5-7 years experience or having managed a team in FCP. That was until Santander offered an apprenticeship programme where the education criteria was to have 104 UCAS or more. This was open to anybody regardless of previous work experience and this gave my the massive opportunity to work in one of the best banks in the world and working in the field that I'm extremely passionate about.
